As evidenced by this annual event, the "Gift of Life" is creating a
community of individuals - clients, survivors, volunteers, sponsors,
and staff - who are generating a powerful, positive force in Southeast
Texas. Annually, more than 200 participants fill every available
seat at Parkdale Mall until there is standing room only.
Recognizing the milestone achieved in cancer survivorship, "Gift of
Life" Board members (who are also medical professionals) praise
survivors for their courage, hope, and strength of spirit. Always
a highlight of the program is the point at which survivors proclaim
their years of survival, some for several decades. This part of the
celebration is often awe-inspiring as so many survivors make their
way to the front, at times the sheer presence of their numbers more
visually powerful than the impact of their words.
Mobile mammography services for women who are medically underserved,
sponsored by TOTAL Petrochemicals, Inc., provides a notable
backdrop to the day's activities.
