Expressions of gratitude from prostate cancer screening clients:
"We thank you all ever so much for the 'Gift of Life.' Without
it, we couldn't afford to be tested. With services like this,
my husband has a chance of life each year. His father died with
prostate cancer. Thank you all and thanks to all of the sponsors. We
are grateful."
"Thank you so much for providing this very important service. I
believe without it, many men would go without testing until it was
too late. Your staff and volunteers were very courteous and knowledgeable."
"Thanks for bringing the program to Orange County. It provides a
much needed and vital service to an otherwise seemingly forgotten
patient base."
Each September, in conjunction with National Prostate Cancer Awareness
Month, the "Gift of Life" hosts its annual Prostate Cancer Screening
Events scheduled in Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Orange.
Over the course of three successive weekends, local urologists and
other physicians, nurses, and phlebotomists who serve as "Gift of
Life" volunteers provide free PSA blood tests and digital rectal
exams to approximately 400 medically underserved men. Clients
receive educational materials related to prostate cancer,
preventative care, early detection, and treatment, and view a
video about the importance of annual prostate cancer screenings.
During the past six years, this initiative has had a tremendous impact
on the lives of thousands of Southeast Texans with the provision
of more than 4,000 free prostate cancer screenings and
educational outreach that has motivated additional men to
visit their doctors and be tested. Notably, we have referred
more than 120 men to UTMB for follow-up on abnormal test
results, with over 20 men having been diagnosed with prostate
cancer through our program.

URGENT MESSAGE
The American Cancer Society suggests:
All men 50 and older should talk with their health care
provider about beginning PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood
tests and DREs (digital rectal exams) every year.
Men in high risk groups (African Americans and
those with a family history of prostate cancer in close family members)
should consider beginning these tests at a younger age. |
