Screening Guidelines for Mammograms
Program Services

MOBILE MAMMOGRAPHY VAN

You are eligible for a free mammogram if:

(1) You live in Southeast Texas - This includes Jefferson, Orange, and Hardin Counties.

(2) You have limited income - To find out if your income qualifies, please call the "Gift of Life" mammogram hotline at the number below.

(3) You are at least 40 years of age, with these exceptions:
  • A woman may be as young as 30 years of age if there is a history of breast cancer in her family (mother, sister, or grandmother-10-year rule applies; i.e., if the grandmother had breast cancer at 43, then the woman may receive a mammogram at age 33).

  • A woman may receive a first mammogram at age 35 and will not be eligible again until she is 40.

(4) You do not have private insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare.

Exceptions:

The "Gift of Life" will provide free mammograms to women who are underinsured (those who have a high deductible or a high co-pay). However, if you are underinsured, we are happy to provide the free mammogram, but if follow-up care is required, you will be financially responsible for part or all of your care.

Further, we will provide free mammograms to women who have Medicare, Part A, but not Part B (as long as you meet our income limits); however, if follow-up care is required, you will be financially responsible for part or all of your care.

(5) You are not a patient at a local UTMB clinic for well-woman exams;

(6) You are not pregnant or breast-feeding;

(7) You have not been treated for breast cancer within the last five years;

(8) You have not had a mammogram within the last 11 months; and

(9) You do not have breast implants.

(10) Breast lump, nipple problem, breast discharge, or a node under the arm

If you have any of these conditions, we cannot schedule you on the mammography van. Please call your physician or the local UTMB clinic to schedule an appointment for a clinical breast exam to determine if you need diagnostic testing at UTMB in Galveston. If you go to UTMB locally, and assuming you are eligible, you will be referred to Galveston under the Cancer Stop Program and will not have to pay for your tests.
