Shakin’, Bakin’, and Celebratin’ Cookbook

$15

The cookbook “Shakin’, Bakin’, and Celebratin’” serves as the 2006 “Gift of Life” Breast Cancer Survivors’ Project.

Survivors have included their favorite recipes accompanied by brief stories or anecdotes about their personal survivorship experiences. Cookbook committee members, as well as “Gift of Life” supporters and staff, were also invited to participate.

Containing over 350 recipes, “Shakin’, Bakin’, and Celebratin’” features traditional categories, such as entrees, starters, side dishes, and sweets, but also includes comfort foods and an extensive section on healthy eating options written by registered nurses from the Julie & Ben Rogers Cancer Institute. Adding a twist are categories titled “Fellas’ Favorites” (prostate cancer survivors’ recipes), “Cooking with the Stars” (recipes from area chefs and restaurants) and “Tickled Pink!” (pink foods).

Cookbooks are $15 each, and all of the net proceeds benefit the “Gift of Life” and will help provide free cancer screenings for those who are medically underserved.

STUFFED BELL PEPPERS (Electric Skillet Style)

1 pound lean ground meat
1/2 cup uncooked rice
1/2 cup celery, chopped
1/2 cup onion, chopped
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 large can tomato sauce, divided use
ketchup
salt and pepper to taste
4 large bell peppers, cut in half and seeded
2 stalks celery, cut in 1 inch pieces
1 medium onion, cut in chunks

Mix ground meat, rice chopped celery and onion, chili powder, salt and pepper with 1/2 can each of tomato sauce and ketchup. Stuff pepper halves with mixture. Place in electric skillet. Put celery pieces and onion chunks around peppers. Pour remaining tomato sauce over peppers. Add water if needed. Sprinkle with chili powder. Cover and simmer for 1 hour.

Getting ready for a long car trip and wanting to be comfortable, I packed my two prostheses in the suitcase. Halfway to my destination, I realized I had not packed a bra. We stopped at a mall, and I rushed into a store to buy one. The saleslady took me to the padded bra section, and I quickly told her I didn’t need a padded one. I had my boobs in my suitcase… I just needed a bra to put them in. I’m sure she has had many laughs over that one.
