Expressions of gratitude from mammogram recipients

"The 'Gift of Life' Program is a Godsend to me. I am off from work with a back injury and I have no insurance. I have a mammogram every year because my mom died from breast cancer, and I had no idea how I was going to afford the test. Thank you so much!"

"Finding myself with no insurance and a limited income, this program is a great blessing for me. I am impressed and grateful for your gift of a mammogram. My mother and grandmother died from breast cancer, and I would not have been able to afford a mammogram if not for this program! Your professionals and volunteers were as nice as could be. Thank you so much."

If all women age 40 and over had annual mammograms plus clinical breast exams, breast cancer death rates could drop as much as 30 percent.*

The "Gift of Life" annually provides almost 1,500 free mammograms to women of limited financial means who do not have medical insurance, Medicaid or Medicare and those who are underinsured. Over 750 "Gift of Life"-sponsored mammograms for medically underserved women are conducted by program partner Memorial Hermann Baptist Hospitals in Beaumont and Orange, following referrals from local UTMB clinics that administer well-woman assessments, including clinical breast exams. Prior to Hurrican Ike in 2008, the program brought UTMB-Galveston's mobile mammography van, the Oleander, to Southeast Texas 20 times each year, dispensing free mammograms and clinical breast exams for another 700 women. Notably, a number of women receive clinical breast exams only and are subsequently referred directly to UTMB-Galveston for follow-up care due to suspicious findings, highlighting the importance of the availability of early detection services.

Since its inception, the "Gift of Life" has provided more than 14,500 free mammograms.
