Annually, the “Gift of Life” conducts over 50 Sidney “Chief” Dauphin Educational Outreach
programs with social groups and at retirement communities, employment centers,
PTA meetings, churches, and health clinics. Through these presentations and
numerous health fairs each year, we collectively reach more than 6,000 people
in Southeast Texas, including teens who attend breast and testicular health
programming delivered in area high school settings in partnership with the
local Hadassah chapter.
Each outreach presentation is comprised of a short video explaining breast or
testicular self-examination or the importance of annual prostate exams, which
is reinforced by medical professionals, including registered nurses from the
Julie & Ben Rogers Cancer Institute. A question and response segment follows
and provides answers to inquiries and attempts to dispel any misconceptions. Also,
survivors share their stories of courage and triumph with those in attendance. All
participants are given literature and encouraged to convey the message of early
detection to their friends and family.
During health fairs, the “Gift of Life” disseminates educational materials on
breast, prostate, skin, lung, ovarian/uterine, and colorectal cancer
prevention. These venues, in particular, provide a unique avenue to meet the
public in large numbers and distribute literature about good health practices.
Further, our organization incorporates bilingual programs into its schedule,
enabling non-English speaking Southeast Texans to receive the critical
communication that early detection can save lives. To ensure that all
of the program’s mammogram and prostate cancer screening clients, along
with the general public, receive important health tips and facts, educational
literature is provided in three languages (English, Spanish, and Vietnamese).
