Cooking with the "Pink Ladies"!
Program Services

The "Pink Ladies" are whipping up a feast. Those fabulous fashionistas have inspired "Shakin', Bakin', and Celebratin'," a cookbook that served as the 2006 Breast Cancer Survivors' Project. (Prostate cancer survivors' submissions are featured in the "Fellas' Favorites" section of the book.)

The primary focus of the cookbook is to honor breast cancer survivors with a permanent keepsake. The endeavor also served as an educational tool by presenting healthy eating options and its sales will help provide free cancer screenings for those who are medically underserved.

Breast and prostate cancer survivors provided their favorite recipes accompanied by brief stories about themselves and their personal survivorship experiences. Cookbook committee members, "Gift of Life" Board members, and program staff were also invited to participate. Cooking with the Stars (recipes from area chefs and restaurants) were also featured.

Each survivor who contributes to the book will received a complimentary copy at the 2006 Breast Cancer Awareness Month Kickoff on Thursday, September 28. Several local shops supporting the program as "Pink Boutiques" sold the cookbooks throughout the month of October.

For a list of participating stores or to purchase a cookbook, please call the "Gift of Life" office at (409) 833-3663 (or toll-free at 877-720-GIFT[4438]).

Cookbooks can also be purchased online through this website. Support the "Gift of Life," pick up your copy, and get cooking with the "Pink Ladies"!

Mix ground meat, rice chopped celery and onion, chili powder, salt and pepper with 1/2 can each of tomato sauce and ketchup. Stuff pepper halves with mixture. Place in electric skillet. Put celery pieces and onion chunks around peppers. Pour remaining tomato sauce over peppers. Add water if needed. Sprinkle with chili powder. Cover and simmer for 1 hour.

Getting ready for a long car trip and wanting to be comfortable, I packed my two prostheses in the suitcase. Halfway to my destination, I realized I had not packed a bra. We stopped at a mall, and I rushed into a store to buy one. The saleslady took me to the padded bra section, and I quickly told her I didn't need a padded one. I had my boobs in my suitcase… I just needed a bra to put them in. I'm sure she has had many laughs over that one.
