Cancer Awareness and Education

Targeted outreach, aimed at raising awareness of the lifesaving benefits of early detection tests and exams is key in reducing cancer mortality. The "Gift of Life" is committed to increasing the consciousness of Southeast Texans about breast, prostate, and testicular cancer, as well as the negative health consequences associated with tobacco use. Our program engages in year-round activities designed to educate the public about good health practices, including preventative health care and the importance of annual cancer screenings.

Free Cancer Screenings

Almost 63% of uninsured Texas adults report they have no personal doctor (the fourth highest rate in the nation). Approximately 45% cannot afford to see a doctor when needed (the seventh highest rate in the U.S.).*

The Texas Cancer Council reports "the most important thing that individuals can do to reduce their chance of dying from cancer is to be screened."

Follow-up Medical Care

Clients who benefit from the free cancer screening services the "Gift of Life" provides also lack options when an abnormal test result indicates the need for follow-up medical care. In fact, while the screenings represent an important program feature on their own, their full significance as an early detection tool is diminished if clients with abnormal results cannot afford the necessary follow-up care (such as repeat screenings, biopsies, surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy).

Smoking Cessation and Prevention

Almost 30% of all cancer deaths and 87% of lung cancer deaths can be linked to tobacco usage.1

More than 50,000 adults die each year from exposure to secondhand smoke, the third leading preventable cause of death in the U.S.2

The “Gift of Life” provides free mammograms and prostate cancer screenings for medically underserved women and men and offers extensive educational outreach throughout seven Southeast Texas counties.

In 2011, the “Gift of Life” diagnosed 13 women with breast cancer and 2 men with prostate cancer, all of whom have been navigated into treatment.

This Holiday Season, we extend our sincere gratitude to our supporters who have helped the “Gift of Life” save lives for 17 years. Ring in the New Year with a call to the “Gift of Life” and find out how you can make a difference!
