I recently watched my mother battle late-stage breast cancer. It was heartbreaking to see someone I love so much suffer, knowing that the outcome could have been different if the cancer had just been caught early.
Even though I knew I was at risk for breast cancer, I didn’t have medical insurance and wasn’t sure how I was going to be screened. Fortunately, my sister knew that I could receive a free mammogram from the Julie Rogers “Gift of Life” Program and encouraged me to schedule a screening. It was a good thing I made the call because I was also diagnosed with breast cancer. But, unlike my mother, my cancer was caught early, and today I enjoy a healthy, full life with my four sons and six grandchildren.
I tell my family and friends all the time that the “Gift of Life” didn’t just give me a mammogram. The “Gift of Life” gave me hope and friendship. Never in my life have I been so loved and cared for! They’ve been there for me every step of the way, giving me strength and support throughout my cancer treatment and now as a survivor.
The “Gift of Life” does so much more than you can imagine. Yes, they provide free breast and prostate cancer screenings and treatment for women and men without insurance. But, the “Gift of Life” also provides important cancer awareness and education for everyone in our community – including young children! They offer ongoing classes for medical professionals to help them better serve their patients and even provide support groups for people like me, whose lives have been affected by cancer.
This program has embraced me and held my hand through the hard times. Because of them, my life has been forever changed.
Thank you, “Gift of Life” and everyone who makes this organization possible.
I Love You!
